Effects of Various Hormones on the ATPase Activity of Mitochondrial Fraction from Rabbit Liver

Abstract
The author investigated the effects of various hormones on the Na--K+-activated ATPase activity of
mitochondrial fraction from rabbit liver in vitro, and obtained the following results:
(1) The mitochondrial fraction contained a little the Na--K+-activated. ATPase in the presence of
Mg++. The ATPase activity increased in proportion to the protein content in the fraction.
(2) Insulin and corticotropin markedly activated the ATPase activity.
(3) Aldosterone and vasopressin had no effect on the ATPase activity.
(4) Thyroxine, progesterone and estradiol markedly depressed the ATPase activity.
(5) Epinephrine, DCI and propranolol depressed the ATPase activity, but no inhibition of the ATPase
activity is observed when these pharmacological antagonists are present together in the incubation
medium.
